North Carolina State announced Saturday the firing of head football coach Dave Doeren.

The announcement comes a day after the Wolfpack fell to 3-4 on the season after losing to Stanford, 31-28.

"I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride," athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. "I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, [wife] Sara and his family the best in the future."

The school said a "national search" for the team's next head coach will begin "immediately."

Doeren had been with the program since 2013 after two seasons at Northern Illinois, his very first head coaching gig. He went 3-9 in his first season with the Wolfpack but turned them into a perennial bowl game participant.

The Wolfpack went to 11 bowl games in Doeren's 13 full seasons, including each of the last six. They are 1-3 this season in ACC play, however.

"It starts with me," Doeren said after Friday's loss. "The guys didn’t play well enough which means I didn’t have them ready."

Doeren went 98-73 at NC State after going 23-4 with Northern Illinois. He finished above .500 in 10 of his campaigns.

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel, who has been on the coaching staff since 2019, will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

The post-Doeren era will begin on Halloween when NC State hosts California.

Doeren is the second coach let go this season after Maryland and Mike Locksley parted ways earlier this week.
